What Should You Do When Broken Down? Keep calm, and follow these steps.

• 1.      Try to pull over so you're off the road. It's not always possible, but this will minimise the danger.
  
• 2.    Turn on your hazard lights so other road users can see you.
  
• 3.    Leave the car by the passenger door (or the door furthest away from the road), and put your hi-vis on if you have one
  
• 4.     Distance yourself from the vehicle, just in case. Either walk a safe distance away, or stand on the other side of the crash barriers if you're on a motorway.
